What is e Commerce Definition?
E-commerce is buying goods or services via the internet.
E-commerce, or electronic commerce, is the buying and selling of goods and services over an electronic network – like the internet.
By 2000, e-commerce accounted for 1% of retail sales and by 2019, reached almost 11% of all retail, according to the Commerce Department.
keeping in mind that retail also accounts for traditionally in-person sales, like automobiles, restaurants, gas, and groceries.
Fun fact, the first e-commerce thing sold was a Sting CD that this guy sold to his friend back in 1994.
Usually, people use e-commerce to refer to selling products online but honestly, it means anything, selling anything online.
These days e-commerce is a massive field and there are hundreds of thousands of stores selling products to millions and billions of people.
It’s an absolutely booming industry, especially in 2021 and beyond. And it’s growing bigger and bigger every year.

So how can you get into e-commerce?
Well, two ways,
- You can be a buyer and you can be a seller.
- You can buy products from e-commerce stores.
I do this all the time.
You can buy your groceries, any products you want, go on Amazon, stuff like that.
You can also set up your own e-commerce store. It’s not hard, it’s actually pretty straightforward and a lot easier than setting up a physical store in a mall or shopping center or something like that.
You just need a website and a product, that’s it.
On Eskycart, I go through how to create an e-commerce store. I teach you everything you need to know.
Eskycart also List the Products Check out.
So second question how does e-commerce work?
How does e Commerce work?
So if you are buying a product,
You’d go to their website,
You often find them through Google search, Facebook ad, or something like that.
You choose a product you want,
You add the cart and then you check out.
Here you can pay with your credit card and you are placing an order.
By doing this you are telling the e-commerce store that they’re okay to charge your card and then send you that product.
Depending on how that store delivers its products.
It might just take one day or a couple of weeks.
It will arrive at your home and it’s a bit like opening a Christmas present.
This is why buying stuff online is a bit addictive.
It’s really fun and it’s like buying yourself a little gift.

Business-to-Consumer is the retail part of e-commerce on the internet.
All kinds of consumer goods are available online like clothes, subscription services, household items, and electronics – sold directly from a business to a customer.
What is B2B e Commerce?
Business-to-Business refers to the electronic exchange of products, services, or information between businesses, like online directories and private supply exchange websites.
The B2B e-commerce market is nearly six times the size of the B2C market.
Sometimes hundreds of B2B transactions must happen for a single B2C sale.
Other types of e Commerce include consumer-to-consumer, consumer-to-business, business-to-administration, and consumer-to-administration.
The rise of e-commerce has forced IT to move beyond infrastructure design and maintenance to consider customer-facing aspects, like consumer data privacy and security, including data-governance related mandates, personally identifiable information privacy rules, and information protection protocols.
